AKA - (Six acres and not a clue!) My personal diary of the comings and goings of wildlife during the development of my little piece of England. '...There shall be in that rich earth a richer dust concealed; A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware, Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam; A body of England’s, breathing English air, Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.' Tawny Treat - we have an Owlet!
For the past few nights, I have
been kept awake by a screeching bird which was settled on the bedroom Dorma
window roof and then on the electricity wires right outside the window. It was
dark and the blinds were closed so I got out of bed to investigate; I assumed
it was one of the adult Tawnies that had seen spotted over the last week. I
found this cute and fluffy Tawny chick calling for food/attention. It flew from
the roof to the wire and then turned to stare me down while continuing
with its rather unneighbourly calls.
The feathers confirmed this was a young bird and definitely not the moulting adult male or female of recent days (Henry and Henrietta).
I only had my phone with me, and it was already dark so the quality of the video is pretty bad, but this is another 'first' for me, so happy to have been able to capture the moment! - I'm hoping my new neighbour will be a little more considerate this evening.

Well slap my bum and call me Sally! A second Tawny (Female) roosting in the woods.
After comparing this bird to the one seen by the veggie patch just a few days ago, I think that this is a female (Henrietta) and the one by the veggie patch by deduction must be a male (Henry) - Females are much larger birds (25%) and about 5% taller.
Amazing to have seen both in the same area so hope that they are a mating pair, although I have not seen any chicks/Owlets...
I hope the molting goes well and they return to the beautiful looking stunning birds they will be when in full plumage.
What a week! ;-) This has inspired me to make and put up a few more nest boxes.
