The entrance hole to the nest box was made at the size recommended in various guides, but it seems this chap wants a grander entrance; looking at the size of the bird, I can understand why as it does not look as if he will be able to get into the existing hole (5cm diameter). He's probably carrying a bit of lockdown excess weight as am I!
AKA - (Six acres and not a clue!) My personal diary of the comings and goings of wildlife during the development of my little piece of England. '...There shall be in that rich earth a richer dust concealed; A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware, Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam; A body of England’s, breathing English air, Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.' Hi Chris - When I build our pecker box, specifically for the Green Woodpecker, I cut a 7.5cm (3 inches) diameter hole and watching with binoculars, even then she was having a real squeeze to get in and out and is still enlarging the hole!
ReplyDeletePs: Watched our Barn Owl in daylight this morning. It landed on one of our Great Tit boxes and with amazement we watched the Great Tit buzzing the owl on the box and eventually chased the owl all the way across the field and away away into the distance!!!
🤣 When nesting season is over I may have to take the boxes down and make the holes bigger! Glad the Great tit was able to stand its gound and protect its nest. Barn owl will have to suppliment its food supply with mice and voles.
